This portrait of Queen Victoria is thought to be quite saucy for the time. She was 24 when it was painted and it is believed to have been a birthday present for her husband, Prince Albert, in 1843. Albert kept it in his private chambers. There is ample evidence to show that the relationship between Victoria and Albert was highly sexual, apart from the nine children they would have, one passage in her diary rhapsodizes about “heavenly love-making”. This is highly unusual, as it was such a taboo for women to be thought of as enjoying sex.
