On June 20th, 1791, Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, his sister Elisabeth, the two royal children and their governess fled from the Tuileries Palace in Paris towards the royalist stronghold in Montmedy, France. They were captured in the town of Varennes and forced to return to Paris.
On June 20th, 1810, Axel Fersen - who, coincidentally, had a large part in planning the royal family’s escape attempt - was killed by an angry mob during the funeral procession of Carl August of Augustenburg.
